GOOD NEWS FOR MICROSOFT OFFICE: RENAMED HTML FILES NOW OPEN IN EXCEL

It’s raining patches. This week we’ve seen a barrage of updates to Windows 10(pick your flavor), nine security bulletins, 28 security patches for Office, and a killer patch for Windows Journal on Win10. Combined that with last week’s 40-odd Office non-security patches, which won’t be available on WSUS until Aug. 16, the same date that the Anniversary Update, version 1607, rolls out on WSUS. There should be a big black mark on every admin’s calendar for Aug. 16. It’s a good day to plan to be out sick.

I figure we have enough patching fodder this month for two thick novels. I also think Microsoft‘s in cahoots with the U.S. Labor Department, trying to pump up system admin employment figures for the August jobs report.

[ InfoWorld has you covered through all stages of Windows 10. Download theWindows 10 installation superguide and the ultimate Windows 10 survivor kit, both available as PDFs. | Stay up on key Microsoft technologies with theWindows Report newsletter. ]

Buried in this mountain of 63 individual patches and voluminous Click-to-Run changes is one very good development for Excel users.

Last month’s buggy Excel patches, KB 3115322 (Security update for Excel 2010) and KB 3115262 (Security update for Excel 2013), have been fixed, at least in part. Since I wrote about them last month, I’ve received confirmation that the bug also affects Excel 2016 and both Office 365 for 2016 and Office 365 for 2013. It’s a grand slam for all versions of Excel released since the turn of the decade. Every one of them was broken by the patches last month.

Once you install last month’s patches for any of those versions of Excel (or they’re installed for you as part of the Click-to-Run nastiness), Excel changes the way it opens HTML or XLA files that have an XLS extension. Microsoft employee Freya explained:

The Excel team has made a change in the behavior of certain file types to increase security. This change came in the security updates KB3115262, KB3170008, and KB3115322. Previously, when you tried to open an HTML or XLA file with an .XLS file extension from an untrusted location, Excel would warn about the mismatch between the file extension and content, but would still open the workbook without Protected View security. After the security updates Excel no longer will open the workbook because these files are not compatible with Protected View and there is no warning or other indication it was not opened. We apologize that Excel is showing a blank screen instead of a more helpful error message with information about what to do next.

Microsoft implemented these, uh, security improvements without warning anybody, and Freya’s revelation didn’t appear until nine days after the change took place. Excel developers and many admins were livid as the unannounced change broke data exporting from many big-name packages — includingMicrosoft’s own Dynamics CRM.

The patches released this week solve the problem for HTML filesmasquerading as XLS, but they don’t solve the problem for XLA or XLAM files (which, as Excel Add-in files, appear to be much less of a nuisance). Here’s Freya’s news:

The Excel team has released a change in HTML/XLS file behavior in today’s security update for Excel 2010, 2013, and 2016. Excel will warn about the mismatch between the file extension and HTML content, but will now open the workbook in Protected View as an additional layer of security. If you trust the workbook, you can then enable editing.

To my way of thinking, that’s how it should’ve been implemented in the first place, and Microsoftshould’ve warned Excel users about the impending change, months in advance.

The fix should show up in Office 365 for 2016 (build 16.0.7070.2036) and Office 365 for 2013 (build 15.0.4849.1003) — for those of you stuck with Click-to-Run — and in individual patches KB 3115438 (for Excel 2016), KB 3115455 (for Excel 2013), and KB 3115476 (for Excel 2010). Those last three patches won’t be out for corporate distribution, via WSUS, until Aug. 16, although you may be able to install them manually.

Office 365 Click-to-Run versions have had a bad buggy streak. In December, Office 365 Click-to-Run wiped out Word macros and customizations. In February, we had a Click-to-Run bug that froze documents as soon as they were opened, and a second CtR bug that knocked out POP3 communicationbadly enough to delete emails. In April, Office 2013 CtR started crashing Lync (Skype for Business) and Outlook. In June, it was a bug that kept Office apps from opening, throwing an error 30145-4.

New innovations in Office 365 for Education

New innovations in Office 365 for Education

With more than 100 million active users, Office 365 empowers individuals, teams and entire organizations to communicate and collaborate. Office 365 for Education builds on this foundation and adds education-specific innovations like the OneNote Class Notebook and Learning Tools—creating the most complete, intelligent and secure service for teaching and learning. It offers the broadest and deepest toolkit for content creation, personalized learning and modern classroom collaboration. And best of all, Office 365 for Education is free for students and teachers!

In March, we released Microsoft Teams, a chat-based workspace, as the newest addition to Office 365. And at our event earlier today, we introduced new classroom experiences in Teams—new features that make Teams in Office 365 for Education the digital hub for teachers and students. These new innovations are in limited preview today and will be broadly available this summer.

The new classroom experiences in Teams will help teachers manage their daily workflow more easily than ever before. Using Teams, they can quickly and efficiently create classes with automatically populated student rosters from their school information system; share files and teaching materials; make announcements; divide the class into project groups and monitor progress; create, distribute and grade quizzes; deliver personalized learning with OneNote Class Notebooks; and distribute, collect and grade assignments. And because Teams is a digital hub, students can work together anytime, anywhere, and on any device; teachers can connect with their peers and continue their own development in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs); and school administrators can communicate and collaborate with their entire staff.

The new classroom experiences make Teams the digital hub for teachers and students.

Even more exciting, the new classroom experiences will also help prepare students for the future. Anthony Newbold, principal at Bear Creek Middle School in Fairburn, Georgia, is an early adopter of Teams and helped us demonstrate the value of these new capabilities for teachers and students at our event this morning. He observed, “These new features do more than just simplify routine tasks. They also help students develop the communication and collaboration skills they’ll need to be successful in the future.” Word, Excel and PowerPoint Online already allow students to co-author documents in real time. But the rich, persistent conversation experience in Teams takes classroom collaboration to a whole new level. This running class discussion allows everyone to read, contribute and learn at their own pace—in class or at home. And moderation controls allow a teacher to easily delete a message, mute a student or pause the conversation. Teams conversations can include just about anything students need to work together, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents; OneNote notebooks; and Planner for group projects. And with just one click, the text-based discussion springs to life with voice and video—making it the ultimate collaboration experience.

Teachers and students can collaborate in their OneNote Class Notebooks right within Teams.

Teams gets even better with partners, and today, we’re announcing four new integrations from education tech leaders busuu, Canvas, Flipgrid and Kahoot!. From directly within Teams, teachers can now help students learn a language with the busuu quizbot; access all their information and tools in Canvas; add video discussions with Flipgrid; and easily create and share Kahoot! learning games. All four integrations will be available this summer, and we’re committed to bringing more partners on board before the beginning of the next school year.

A preview of Office in the Microsoft Store for Education

Also at our event earlier today, Terry Myerson introduced Windows 10 S, a new Windows experience streamlined for security, simplicity and superior performance in the classroom. We’re pleased to announce a preview of Office in the Microsoft Store for Education starting in June—so teachers and students can enjoy the power of the full-featured Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps on Windows 10 S devices.

This preview of Office contains the Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps you know and trust, now delivered and updated from the Microsoft Store for Education. There are some differences in the apps that are worth calling out. The apps delivered from the Store will use new Store-based install and update technology; the apps will only be available in 32-bit format; and while web add-ins are fully supported, Office COM add-ins aren’t supported on Windows 10 S. The preview period will allow us to make sure things are running smoothly before we make Office in the Microsoft Store for Education generally available later this calendar year, and the apps will automatically be updated by the Store at that time. Additionally, it’s important to note that OneNote is already available in the Store today and the Teams app will be available in the Store in the third quarter of 2017.

MICROSOFT REVEALS MANY DRASTIC CHANGES FOR WINDOWS 10

Recently, Microsoft reveals a latest test edition of Windows 10 build number 16215 along with a number of drastic changes. All of the new features will be available to all the users till the end of this year in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update but the Windows Insider on the Fast Ring can catch them immediately.

The first major change is the redesigning of the notification center with the separate sections provided for the apps, which has resulted in a complete new look. It combines group notifications from devices, apps and somewhere else together in a more logical way and look-wise also seems more attractive.

This latest Windows 10 update will allow you to pin your preferred websites to the taskbar. Obviously, the pinned websites will open in Microsoft’s Edge browser but this feature is returning after receiving feedback from the Windows 10 users. Microsoft is also making changes in its Cortana (an intelligent digital assistant created by Microsoft Office.com for Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, etc.), making the digital assistant able to prompt for reminders by scanning the images for things such as events, etc. For instance: Cortana can create the reminder for the taken photo of a poster or of other things. Cortana has also enriched with a new lasso feature that allows the stylus users circle content to create reminders for things such as movies. Additionally, Microsoft is also enhancing the animations for new tabs in Edge to speed up the things a little more.

Perhaps, Microsoft has come up with the biggest change in Windows 10 stylus support. The handwriting panel has been renovated with features such as more gestures, emoji, enhanced editing, quick access to emoji and symbols, automatic handwriting detection, etc. These features provide facilities such as words written with the pen get converted to text automatically along with shifting ahead to let you simply continue the writing. These also allow you to select the converted text to edit and make corrections along with scratching, joining, or splitting it by making use of the ink gestures. By default, the handwriting panel will be available floating next to where you are writing at present. The stylus can even be utilized to scroll between apps and websites now. An option “Find my pen” to show at which word or phrase you were on your device when you last used the pen, has also been included by the Microsoft.

Microsoft has also brought a new “winkey + period / semicolon keyboard” shortcut that will activate a new emoji panel from where one can easily pick up the most suitable emoji for his/ her messages, making it effortless to insert emoji into social media messages or even e-mails. The company is also providing the Windows 10 desktop and the tablet users with a new touch keyboard which includes features such as prediction, one- handed input, shape writing with your fingers or a stylus and emoji sug

In addition to the bigger features mentioned above, some other smaller changes to Windows 10 like a new copy link feature that allows easy sharing of links is provided in the new share page, a feature that make you able to switch between public and private for network connections easily and enhanced support for HDR monitors, are also available.

Microsoft in its blog has also mentioned a number of other smaller changes and fixes that will be provided to the Windows 10 users.
